8 Grateful Years In Business!

Here’s to Grateful 8!

We first opened our doors at 528 23rd St. (where the Kitchen Chick is now) before moving next door to a bigger space!

We first opened our doors at 528 23rd St. (where the Kitchen Chick is now) before moving next door to a bigger space!

Wow! Fit TRI Run is celebrating 8 years in business! We have said this one hundred times before and it’s worth repeating: we here is because of YOU! Thank you! Thank you for your love, support, patience and friendship over the last eight years!

Before we opened Fit to Run (now Fit TRI Run), neither Steve nor I had ever owned/ operated our own business. Neither of us had ever worked in retail, either.  Hurricane Ike was the devastating event that inspired us to follow a dream based on our mutual passion: to help improve lives through running, walking and fitness.

Although we have a thousand things to be grateful for, I’ll focus on 8 for our 8 years in business:

8 things for which we are Grateful:

1- We are thankful and grateful for all the friendships that have been formed through our shop and through our running/walking programs! We love becoming friends with our customers. When we look around, we see many circles of friendships continuously forming and growing. If it wasn’t for Fit TRI Run, for our training programs, and for you participating, many of our lives’ paths may never have crossed.

2- We are thankful and grateful for all the victories and triumphs- no matter how big or small! We have helped hundreds of folks reach many finish lines that may have been daunting. We have shared laughter and tears and prayers over life’s celebrations and challenges. We know that we can do anything through Christ who strengthens us. We are one family.

3- We are grateful and thankful for our resiliency! We have persisted through injuries and serious illnesses. We have persevered through cancer, dementia and death of a loved one. We have come together to support each other no matter what life gives us. Together, we have made lots of lemonade! 🙂

4- We are thankful and grateful that we continue to grow and become stronger physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally through running, walking, and multi-sport fitness.

5- We are thankful and grateful for this journey in life! The proverb goes “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. We are thankful for the many sunrises and for the amazing sky during our early morning training. We are also thankful for lower humidity days!

6- We are thankful and grateful for all of you who volunteer your time and energy at packet pick-ups and at races! We are grateful for your loving, caring disposition and your smiles – no matter how long the days are. Thank you for being part of our extended family and for being part of our team! It’s not easy getting up at 4am to execute events… but it sure is gratifying when it’s all said and done. We can only do this with your help!

7- We are thankful and grateful for all the goals you created and surpassed! We remember your first “4 miler” and your first open water swim! We remember your first 5K, your first half marathon, your first full marathon, your first triathlon. We celebrate your milestones and accomplishments and we cheer you in your next goal! We do our best to be at the finish line or start line of your events. And to add we are thankful and grateful to be an instrumental part in raising fitness and active living in Galveston! Keeping feet happy and healthy is important to us. Even more important is communicating that YOU CAN DO IT! Nearly anyone can walk or run a 5K and/or do a triathlon. You decide what fitness or life health goal you’d like to accomplish and we’ll help you get there! The feeling when you cross that finish line is amazing! You CAN do it! We believe in you! We’ll be with you every step of the way!

8- We are thankful and grateful to be in business eight years! Steve and I poured our heart and soul into Fit TRI Run. We believe that we can make a positive difference in lives and in our community. We stay abreast of changes in shoe technology as well as run form, swim form, etc. We love educating. We love employing and empowering people. We give back a tremendous amount to our community. We rely on you to shop with us! Every purchase you make with us keeps us in business – AND- approximately 70% or more stays in our community.

Once again we are thankful and grateful for YOU! Thank you for shopping with us! Thank you for our love, support, and friendship. Thank you for keeping us in business in Galveston for the last eight years! We continue to rely on you so that Fit TRI Run can continue to give back.

Here’s to many more great years with you!

With gratitude,

Kim & Steve

Happy Feet Makes for Happy School Days!

Come in for your kids back to school needs!

Come in for your kids back to school needs!

As a child, I remember not being able to go to sleep the night before the first day back to school; I was excited and nervous at the same. The start of a new school year brings new classrooms, new teachers, new opportunities, and perhaps a new school and new friends. There are so many concerns going through the minds of our kids; the last thing they should be concerned about is achy feet due to poor quality or fit of shoes.

As you prepare your child for back-to-school, I urge you to get him/ her good quality shoes that fit properly! The quality and proper fit of a child’s shoes is vital to his/ her long term foot health! Frequently children wear the same shoes to school, gym class and sometimes for play or sport after school. Chances are, your child will wear his/ her shoes for 8 or more hours a day.

Don’t go to a self-serve shoe store where your decision is based on color and size. Spend your time and money wisely and just come see us. We are a full-service shoe store with ONLY good quality shoes. You can’t go wrong! Dependent upon your child’s foot size, you can expect to pay $45-70 for a great pair of kids running shoes. We’re smart, we’re local, and we care. Forty years from now, your kids will thank you.

Here’s to healthy feet and happy bodies,

Tips to Preserve Your Gear and Keep Stink Free

In the newest class of workout gear – technical fibers are all the rage. Comfortable, sweat wicking and temperature controlled are many benefits of “tech” gear. However, even with today’s workout gear being so high tech – it’s still not STINK FREE!

Check out some tips to preserve your gear and get the smell out!

    • Fabric softener coats the fabrics of your clothing and can prevent them from being able to absorb water and detergent when being washed.
    • In the same aspect of using fabric softener, using too much detergent can also coat your clothing and prevent the absorption of water.
    • A good pre-soak is often overlooked with a busy schedule, but your clothes will thank you! Pre-soaking in cold water with a sport specific detergent will help eliminate any pesky odors.
    • Sport specific detergents are formulated specifically for washing workout clothes and can be a valuable asset in keeping your clothes stink free. There are a variety of special detergents – come see us to try out Sweat X Sport!
    • Mold and mildew can begin to grow on workout gear that is left in a gym bag or laundry basket for too long, wash your gear sooner rather than later to prevent buildup.
    • Technical fibers are generally on the delicate side and washing in cold water will help maintain any special performance properties for many workouts to come.
    • Consider hanging your gear to prevent you from drying out spandex, lycra and other fabrics
    • Better safe than sorry! Some performance fabrics require special care, always check the label to ensure you’re maintaining the integrity of your gear!

Shop locally this holiday season!

Why shop at a locally owned business rather than heading to the “MALL” first this holiday season? The following 8 reasons show how more money spent at local businesses is reinvested in our community and helps our island maintain its unique appeal.

      Shopping local creates jobs.

Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local community, they buy their groceries here, they pay their rent here, they pay their taxes here and they volunteer for local charities and schools.

Local independent shops and restaurants invest more in our communities.

Local businesses are proportionately more generous in their support of local charities, schools and community events. Supporting local shops means a financial impact on our community, and the organizations that we care about.

Local shops sell a wide range of

unique and interesting products at affordable prices.

Many people fall out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available. Downtown Galveston has many wonderful boutiques, gift shops, galleries and locally owned restaurants you won’t find anywhere else.

Shopping local saves you money.

Heading over the causeway may sound like fun and out of town malls and outlets have done a good job of convincing us that local business equal expensive, which is not true!  If you add travel and your time, the overall cost is often much higher.

Shopping local retains our communities.

No one likes to pay sales tax, but it is a reality.  When you shop local part of your sales tax dollars  end up here on the island. Shopping in other communities benefits them, not our island, not our neighborhoods.

Shopping local retains our distinctiveness.

Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the changing population needs.  And many of the local shops offer services like free gift wrapping during the holidays, try getting that at a big box store at the mall.

 Local shops are for everyone.

Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for the elderly and young generations and those without transportation.  Easy walk-able downtown Galveston is an interesting place to spend a day.  Enjoy our unique architecture, visit the seaport.

Local shops value you more.

Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service.  These business owners are your neighbors, your family, your friends.

and best of all- there is only one Fit TRI Run – and it’s here in Galveston!

Steve and I TRULY appreciate your business! Thank you for keeping our doors open for the last 5 years. Thank you for participating in our events and supporting our causes. Thank you for bringing joy, laughter and friendship to our lives! Thank you for keeping Galveston strong and healthy.

Wishing you a very joy-filled and prosperous holiday season.

It’s Just a Hill- Get Over It! Join us for a hill running clinic this Saturday.

It’s Just a Hill…Get Over It!

’tis the season for fun runs and a really great one is just around the corner!

Have you signed up for the 3rd annual DAILY NEWS PRESS 5K, 10K and kids 1K yet? Well make sure to sign up and JOIN US for a hill-running-form-clinic! It’s just a hill…we’ll help you get over it! Read on for more info…

For us flat-landers, the thought of running or walking up a hill as big and steep as the Causeway can be a little intimidating. But think of the views from the top (and the photo ops!)! How awesome is it to have a Pelican-eye view of the Bay? And how often do you get to do this on foot? (I’ll answer for you: only 3 times a year during a race- so don’t miss out on this one!)

As with any sport, using proper form is important when running hills. Whether you are running uphill or down, maintaining good running form is essential for improved speed, efficiency and reducing excessive pounding.

Uphill running: It’s better to take super short, quick steps running up hill rather than taking long, powering strides. “Powering up” the hill with long strides will most likely leave you breathless and is not necessarily efficient or fast.

Quick uphill tips:

*Shorten your stride (take shorter steps)

*Increase your cadence (take quicker steps)

*Lean into the hill – but DON’T bend at the waist. Think about standing tall. Keep your back straight.

*Ideally, you will land mid-foot/forefoot. Don’t stay on your toes; allow the heel to drop down to the ground with each step before you push off through your big toe. There is stored energy in the heel- when you allow your heel to fully drop, you can tap into some of this free, stored energy that will help your forward momentum.

*Drive from the hips- focus on using your hip muscles to lift your knee while you are pushing off the back leg. (The back leg should be nice and long and straight with each step up).

*Keep elbows bent at 90degree angle and drive your elbow back behind you with each step (right elbow back, left hip flexed forward and vice versa).

*Keep your shoulders out of your ears (stay relaxed in the shoulders)

*Keep your neck long; look a few feet ahead of you.

*Engage your core!

Here comes the fun part:

Downhill running! Downhill running = free energy!!! Take advantage of the “free” increase in running speed. When traveling downhill, gravity is your friend. You can control your speed with your body. If you want to run faster, lean forward (into the downhill) from your hips- not your head or trunk. If you want to slow down, run more upright. Your feet will always want to land under your center of gravity- your lean will define where your center of gravity is. You will notice that when you lean forward into the downhill, you will need to take much quicker, shorter steps to maintain control. Keep your feet moving fast and continue to lift with your hip flexor (lift up your knees, keep knees bent and land SOFTLY). It’s important not to land on your HEELS first when going down HILL. Landing on your heels is too much impact through your joints. Allow your muscles to act as shock-absorbers –this little tip has huge physical benefits over time.

Quick downhill tips:

*Look downhill, but not at your feet.

*Don’t over-stride; keep your steps short and quick.

*Avoid landing on your heels first. When you land on your heels, you are “putting on the brakes” and wasting energy. You are also sending too much impact through your joints. Use your muscles to run, not your joints.

*Keep your knees soft and bent (think of you knees like shock absorbers on a mountain bike)

*Land softly with your full foot. Avoid “stabbing” your toes into the ends of your shoes. Just lift your foot and land. Let gravity assist you in your momentum.

*Use your arms for balance. Don’t worry about the forward/backward swing needed in running uphill.

*Engage your core! Think of your abs, rear end, and back as a stable base. Allow your arms and legs to do what they need to do.
Reading about hill running may make technique sound complicated, but with a little demonstration and practice, it makes sense and can be quite fun!

Want to learn this uphill/ downhill technique and “practice” running hills? Great!!

JOIN US  this Saturday, Aug 30th 9-10am at FIT TRI RUN.

This Saturday, the 30th, we will also have the latest models of the HOKA ONE ONE shoes for you to try on and try out!

**For these sessions, be dressed and ready to run/ walk. All ages and skill levels welcome. Meet at Fit TRI Run (518 23rd St, Galveston) by 9am.

Hill training can build incredible strength and speed that overflows into flat land running. The key is to be smart and not to do much too soon.

If you’re still trying to decide whether or not to do the DAILY NEWS PRESS RUN, just remember that the Causeway is just a hill…. so get over it! (Literally. On Sept 13th)

Hammer Toes: Tips and Tools for healing/ correcting

Here at FIT TRI RUN, we see all types of feet and have experience with a variety of foot conditions. We strive to do our best to match an ideal solution to individual needs. Our solutions usually involve a combination of products and education.

One of the great new products we discovered over the last year is CORRECT TOES. Correct toes are designed to:

  • Correct many common foot & leg problems
  • Increase athletic performance, decrease injuries
  • Improve strength & flexibility of toes & feet
  • Enhance balance and stability

It is a seemingly simple tool that can have a huge positive impact in the health of your foot and alignment of your toes. We have spoken with many people dealing with bunions that have used CORRECT TOES and have experienced improvement with toe alignment and decreased pain over time.

Only recently have we realized the positive effects CORRECT TOES have on the condition of Hammertoes. As with any product, there are no miracle cures. But proper stretching combined with the right tools and shoes will aid your body in healing. Please click below for a short, simple video demonstrating good stretches for HammerToes.

If you or someone you know is suffering from foot issues, know that we at FIT TRI RUN have solutions for many conditions. As always, we recommend you consult with your healthcare provider for your special or medical needs.
